New York Brunch Vibes At The Pen And Pencil

I’m always looking for new brunch spots in the city to try. Manchester has a great variety from healthier options to maple drenched waffles and pancakes. However with the colder mornings setting in, I wanted more of a comforting savoury brunch, so Drew and I decided to try The Pen And Pencil which is in the Northern Quarter. We went on a Monday *Tip: You get 50% off food on a Monday if you book beforehand.

If you’re wondering where they got their name from, let me explain. It is taken from an infamous bar on East 45th Street in New York’s ‘Steak Row’ which was popular with newspaper journalists and ad men- the original ‘Mad Men.’ And the décor really does play homage to it’s inspiration. If you’re a Gossip Girl fan, it’s like Dan Humphrey’s Brooklyn apartment turned into a bar. It’s kept simple, with natural light and quirkly bulbs. I can imagine it looks great at night when it is turned into a drinks venue with their resident DJ.

So, back to food. I decided on a pot of mint tea and the Avocado and Feta; sourdough muffin layered with chilli jam, sliced avocado, rocket and two poached eggs sprinkled with feta cheese. Also included is a side of hash browns. I also opted for a side of bacon. This is possibly the best brunch I have ever eaten, all my favourite food on one plate, perfectly runny yolk from the poached egg and the chilli jam is to die for. You must try this! Full price this is £7.50, with an additional £1.50 for bacon which is reasonable considering the amazing quality of the produce. However with the 50% off offer this is an absolute bargain at £4.50!

Drew ordered a flat white and the Eggs Pen and Pencil; sourdough muffin layered with sausage patty, streaky bacon, two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and pancetta crisps. This came with the hash browns too. I tried the sausage patty which I was really impressed by, and the handmade hash browns are great too.Full price this is £8.00, so £4 .00 on a Monday.

As well as great food Pen and Pencil also has an impressive looking bar and if you get there early enough it’s a nice chilled spot for doing some blog work.

All in our drinks and food came to around £16.00 for two coffees, a tea and two brunch meals. Perfect way to kick away the Monday morning blues.

What’s your favourite brunch spot where you are?
